The Painting Course introduces historically-based techniques and foundational skills in oil painting. In a professional studio setup, the instructor will guide you through a series of progressively complex projects designed to develop both your technical abilities and artistic growth. Classes take place in the DuMond Studio, where drawing and painting students work side-by-side, fostering a collaborative environment for tailored, one-on-one instruction.
The course begins with drawing from a plaster cast, which will then be transferred to canvas and painted. This initial exercise focuses on monochromatic painting in black and white, helping you establish a solid understanding of value relationships. As you progress, you will transition to a limited color palette, deepening your knowledge of color theory and mixing techniques.
Emphasizing patience, craftsmanship, and precision, the curriculum encourages you to work at your own pace, typically over several trimesters, to develop a comprehensive skill set. We recommend starting with the CEDC100 Drawing Course to build a strong foundation before advancing to painting.
