This class introduces students to essential figure drawing techniques and concepts inspired by the Academic tradition, in order to successfully navigate the complexity of the human form. Students are taught to establish accurate proportions and gesture while learning to be selective in their vision. Their ability to see form, structure, and the effects of light are developed through individual and group instruction, demonstration, and practice, allowing each student to progress slowly and steadily toward personal and class goals. Throughout this process, students actively engage with observation-based strategies involving editing and emphasis, grouping the establishment of spatial depth, size calibrations, and viewpoint. Lessons in three-dimensional construction will also allow students to more faithfully interpret the figure, as they move from live model to drawn human form.
We strongly encourage all students to attend the Figure Drawing classes offered by the Lyme Academy as a foundation for the Figure Painting classes.
