This exhibition explores the psychological and conceptual impact of a monochrome palette. Featuring a selection of contemporary figurative artists’ works; curated by Lyme Academy Co-Artistic Directors Amaya Gurpide and Jordan Sokol.
Monochrome Exhibition
Artists’ use of a monochrome or single-color palette dates to the pre-Renaissance period, when an oil painting technique called grisaille (literally, “grayness”) dominated the Northern European art world. Today, and despite the color-saturated intensity of our Technicolor existence, artists have continued this legacy, choosing to explore their reality in a manner that extracts its essences, sets up new abstract paradigms for contemplation, and, at times, detaches from it completely. This exhibition explores those practices, and the psychological and conceptual impact of a monochrome palette, through a selection of contemporary figurative artists’ works which engage with its unique properties and push the boundaries of traditional monochromaticÂ

The Chauncey Stillman Gallery is open daily 10 am – 4 pm.
The gallery will be closed on Wednesday, November 23 and November 24 in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday. The gallery will reopen on Friday, November 25.
