COURSE:

Sculpture I (SC150-5)

MATERIALS NEEDED: FIRST SEMESTER (FALL)

First Project: Please bring these armature supplies to first class:

  • 16 x 16 x ¾ inch plywood board.
  • Two 16 inch runners (1 x 2 inch strips.)
  • ½ inch flange.
  • ½ inch pipe,  6 inches long.
  • One roll ¼ inch aluminum wire. 
  • One roll 1/16 inch aluminum wire. 
  • Four sets of ¼ inch bolts, nuts & washers.
  • One box of 1 inch nails or wire brads.
  • One 10 inch or 12 inch calipers.
  • 15 lbs. of gray Klean Klay (marked 'f' for firm.)
  • If possible, buy 3 rake tools (large, medium & small). If too costly, buy a medium rake.
  • Assortment of wooden modeling tools.  Each student will need one knife-edged shape, one chiseled shape (flat edge perpendicular to handle) & one saw-toothed shape (teeth on straight edge perpendicular to handle.)

Second Project: Planar Head

  • 16 x 16 x ¾ inch plywood board.
  • Two 16 inch runners (1 x 2 inch strips.)
  • ½ inch flange.
  • ½ x 3/8 inch bushing.
  • One 3/8 inch pipe, 6 inches long.
  • One roll 1/16 inch aluminum wire. 
  • One 2 ft aluminum wire. 3/8 inch
  • One toilet float.
  • Your first box of wire brads should last for the semester.
  • Four sets of ¾ inch bolts, nuts & washers.
  • 15 lbs. of gray Klean Klay (marked 'f' for firm.)

Third Project: Life-Size Portrait

  • Use the same armature supplies as for the second project (above).

SECOND SEMESTER (SPRING)

    • 16” x 20”  2/3 plywood
    • Two 20” runners (1” x 2”)
    • ½” flange
    • ½” x 18” pipe
    • ½” elbow
    • One ½” x ¼” reducers
    • ¼” x 6” pipe
    • ¼” tee
    • 3/16” aluminum wire (1 roll) [the new packaged rolls are great]
    • 1/16” aluminum wire (one roll)
    • Four sets of ¼” bolts, nuts and washers-with 2” long bolts provided by Art Store
    • Box of 1” nails or wire brads
    • One caliper 10”
    • 3’ measuring tape
    • 1 lb. white Klean Klay
    • 5 lbs. each of the five colors listed (yellow, red, blue, orange and green)  Klean Klay
    • 15 lbs. of cream colored Klean Klay
    • Assortment of wooden modeling tools and three rakes (small, medium, and large)
    • 1 block of wood ½” x 5” x 5” (ask Lou to cut them)

     Second Project

     Same as first semester except:

    • no block of wood needed
    • Four sets of ¼” bolts, nuts and washers-with 1½” long bolts provided by Art Store
COURSE: Bas Relief Sculpture (SC340-5, SC440-5)

MATERIALS NEEDED:

First project ( Supplies needed on first day):

·         One 16 x 24 x ¼ inch plywood board.

·         Two 24 inch runners for flatter support.

·         10 lbs. gray Klean Klay (marked F for firm.)

·         One small rake sculpture tool.

·         Assortment of wooden modeling tools. Each student will need one knife edged shape modeling tool, one chiseled shape (flat edge perpendicular to handle) modeling tool and one saw toothed shape (teeth on a straight edge perpendicular to handle) modeling tool.

Second and Third Projects:

·         One 24 x 24 x ¼  inch plywood board.

·         Four 24 inch runners (1 x 2 inch strips.)

COURSE:

Sculpture Écorché (SC290-5, SC390-5, SC490-5)

MATERIALS NEEDED: First (Fall) Semester

COURSE: Introductory Figure Drawing: Construction (DR250)
MATERIALS NEEDED:  
  • 18 x 24 inch sketching pad, 50 sheets, 50lbs. bond or similar.
  • Smooth, economical paper, preferably non-spiral (no newsprint.)
  • Charcoal pencils, string style, two each of hard, medium and soft. 
  • Two small kneaded erasers.
  • One chamois.
  • One sand paper paddle.
  • One small package or box of vine charcoal.
  • One drawing board, 20 x 30 inches wood or styrofoam core board.
  • Two drawing board clips.
  • Spiral note book 9 x 12 inches.
 
COURSE: Constructional Figure Drawing (DR 250)
MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • Masonite, wood or styrofoam board approximately 20 x 30 inches with two clips to hold a drawing pad.
  • One standardized drawing pad with tape bound at top (no spiral bound pads, please) approximately 18 x 24 inches, 50 sheets, 50 lbs. weight or heavier, bond paper, smooth or slight tooth surface, white and acid free ("Biggie" sketch pad.) NO NEWSPRINT!
  • Sketchbook approximately 9 x 12 inches, 100 sheets, 60 lbs. and acid free (Strathmore 400 series "Hardbound Sketch Book" is ideal.)
  • Medium size tracing paper pad.
  • Charcoal pencils, string style, two each of hard, medium and soft (3).
  • Two drawing board clips.
  • Sand paddle with medium to course sandpaper.
  • One chamois.
  • Soft vine charcoal, thin sticks, 1 box.
  • Graphite pencil, 2B.
  • two Kneaded erasers.
  • Spiral notebook 8 1/2" x 11".
  • Portfolio, either an inexpensive portfolio or make one using cardboard.
COURSE: Sculpture Composition II (DR 272 - sophomores)
MATERIALS NEEDED: SPRING SEMESTER:

Two sets of the following:

  • 1/8 tee *
  • 1/8 x 6 inch pipe.*
  • 1/2 x 1/8 inch reducer.*
  • 1/2 inch flange.*
  • 1/2 inch x 8 inch pipe *
  • 16 x 16 inch board.
  • Roll of 1/8 inch armature wire. *
  • Roll of 1/16 inch armature wire.
  • Saddle Tee.

 

*Note: This armature is sold pre-packaged in the art store.


Students are given compositional projects, for which they will build 12" maquettes of their own creative ideas.  The purpose of the class is to teach students the nature of three-dimensional composition.
